Exercise - How to use Dragon Copilot basic functionality

Before you choose how to document a patient encounter, make sure you understand how to navigate the Dragon Copilot workspace, manage patient sessions, and decide which documentation approach makes the most sense for the situation.

In this unit, you’ll practice navigating the workspace, creating and navigating patient sessions, and determining when to use dictation versus ambient recording.

Note

The features and functionality available to you might vary based on your organization's configuration, language settings, and whether you're using the web, mobile, desktop, or embedded app.

Navigate the Dragon Copilot workspace

The Dragon Copilot workspace is where you access patient sessions, review documentation, and manage encounters.

From the workspace, you can:

• View your list of patient sessions.
• Open an existing session to review notes and transcripts.
• Start a new patient session for an encounter.

Exercise 1 - Explore the workspace

Scenario

You just opened Dragon Copilot and you want to explore the workspace.

Sign in to Dragon Copilot and get ready to explore. Select a tab to practice on your own or get guidance as you go.

Practice on your own

1. Locate the list of patient sessions.
2. Identify where to open an existing session.
3. Identify where to start a new patient session.
4. Open Settings and confirm your specialty.
5. Confirm your microphone is set correctly.

Guided practice

1. Locate the session list: Select the expand sessions icon in the upper left corner to see the Session list.
2. Open an existing session: Select a patient session from the session list. Once it opens, you see session views such as the note and transcript.
3. Start a new patient session: Select the Create patient session button in the lower left corner.
4. Confirm or set your specialty: Select the Settings icon and go to Profile to confirm that you have a primary specialty set.
5. Confirm your microphone: Open Settings and verify the correct microphone is selected.

Create a new patient session

A patient session organizes documentation for a specific encounter. Each visit, whether you use ambient recording or dictation, starts with a session.

Exercise 2 - Create a patient session

Scenario

A patient is scheduled for a visit, but you don't see a session for the patient yet in Dragon Copilot.

Practice on your own

1. Start a new patient session.
2. Confirm the session is ready for documentation.
3. Decide how you plan to capture documentation for this encounter.

Guided practice

1. Start a new session: Select Create patient session to create a session for the encounter.
2. Confirm the session is ready: Once the session opens, look for the session tabs and the bottom section of Dragon Copilot, where dictation, ambient recording, quick AI actions, and the chat box are available.
3. Decide how to capture documentation: If you plan to capture a live patient conversation, choose the ambient recording button. If you plan to add or update text outside the live conversation, choose the dictation microphone icon.

Navigate within a patient session

Inside a patient session, you can:

• Review AI‑generated notes.
• Navigate between the note and the transcript.
• Make edits or clarifications before finalizing.
• Use the Copilot chat box to ask questions or refine documentation.

Exercise 3 - Navigate a session

Scenario

You completed an encounter and want to review the documentation.

Practice on your own

1. Open an existing patient session.
2. Review the AI-generated clinical note.
3. Go to the transcript to confirm accuracy.
4. Use the chat box or edit the note to refine the documentation.

Guided practice

1. Open the session: Select the patient session from the session list.
2. Review the note: Open the Note tab to view the clinical summary.
3. Open the transcript: Go to Transcript from the session tabs.
4. Make an edit: Return to the note and make a brief clarification if needed.
5. Use the chat box: Enter a prompt to refine the note or ask a question about the encounter.

Review AI-generated documentation, navigate between note and transcript views, and refine content using both direct editing or the Copilot chat box.

Decide when to use dictation vs. ambient recording

Dragon Copilot supports more than one way to capture documentation. Choosing the right approach depends on your workflow and the situation.

Ambient recording is often useful when:

• You’re having a live patient conversation.
• You want documentation captured in the background.
• You prefer minimal typing during the visit.

Dictation is often useful when:

• You want to add or update documentation using your voice.
• You’re documenting outside of a live patient encounter.
• You’re making focused edits or additions.

You can use either or both in a patient session, depending on your needs.

Exercise 4 - Choose the right approach

Scenario

You’re seeing a patient for a follow‑up visit and later need to add a clarification to the note.

Practice on your own

1. Decide which recording approach makes sense during the visit.

3. Reflect on why you chose each method.

1. During the visit: If you're capturing a live patient conversation, use ambient recording.
2. Follow-up documentation: If you want to add information without generating a new recording, use the dictation microphone to add details or clarify the note.
3. Reflect on your choice: Ask yourself whether you're capturing conversation in real time or editing text after the encounter. That question helps determine the best tool to use.
