Memory, organization, and concentration
Learners with dyslexia:
- Tend to be out-of-the-box thinkers and good problem solvers. Yet they might also struggle to organize and recall details and procedures.
- Need time to process and organize their thoughts.
- Benefit from instructions that are broken down into parts with visual reminders.
- Benefit from organizational tools to assist with abstract processes, such as writing.
- Find success with using graphic organizers, mind maps, speech to text apps, and visual outlines to express themselves.
- Can flourish in a classroom with a consistent schedule and an explicit organizational system.
Reflection
Speed doesn't directly correlate with intelligence. How do you ensure that all your students have an opportunity to share what they know without penalizing them for the time it may take them to finish?
Consider your organizational procedures and expectations in your classroom. Are there aspects that could be more consistent? What might you change to create an explicit and smooth process?
