Regional esports events
Many schools and school districts around the world expanded their programs to an even larger scale. Let's look at how some of them organized these broad-reaching and inclusive events. It's important to note that just like schoolwide implementation, regional esports event don't require every teacher and student from a region to participate. Schools may have multiple teams participating, or just one!
New York City's Battle of the Boroughs
New York City Public Schools built a program available to all one million of their learners. Any interested student or team could participate by following the guidelines for entry, as listed on their Minecraft Challenge landing page: Minecraft Education Challenge. New York City is divided into five boroughs and would have students compete initially within their own boroughs, and then later against other boroughs.
Battle of the Boroughs was broken down into three phases:
- The Build Challenge
- The borough qualifiers
- The finals

Ireland's Future is MINE
Ireland’s Future is MINE was open to every primary school across Ireland, with 27% of all primary schools participating! Ireland is divided into four provinces: Connacht, Leinster, Munster, and Ulster. Schools submitted build challenge videos from these provinces across Ireland with the hope of being the chosen school to represent their province in the tournament.
This program was in three phases, but had fewer teams participating than the New York City event. It was a simpler esports model but had the opportunity to engage just as many students.

- The Provincial Semi-Finals
- The Finals
The video Ireland's Future Is MINE - The Final follows the journey of the last two teams in the competition.
