Examine Microsoft Teams on Cloud PCs
Microsoft Teams is one of the core Microsoft 365 applications available for Windows 365 Cloud PCs. Teams is installed by default on the "Windows 10/11 Enterprise + Microsoft 365" images that are available for Windows 365 Enterprise in the Windows 365 image gallery. These images include Microsoft 365 apps and Teams optimization components to support Teams chat, presence, calling, and meetings, for the same peer-to-peer audio and video call experience as physical endpoints. Teams is included by default with Windows 365 Business.
With additional configuration, Teams can also be installed on the "Windows 10/11 Enterprise + OS Optimizations" images in the Windows 365 Enterprise image gallery and your custom images. See Install Teams on non-optimized or custom images.
Note
Teams functionality may be limited to chat and audio calls only, depending upon the Windows 365 plan that is selected.
For more information, compare plans.
Microsoft Teams installs during the first sign-in to the Cloud PC. You need to either restart Teams or sign out of your Cloud PC and sign back in after installing to activate the media optimizations.
For optimal Teams experience on a Cloud PC, follow these guidelines:
- Prepare your network for Microsoft Teams. See: Prepare your organization's network for Microsoft Teams.
- Conform to Cloud PCs sizing requirements for Microsoft Teams. See: Cloud PC size recommendations.
- Conform to End-user hardware requirements for Microsoft Teams. See: End-user hardware requirements to access a Cloud PC.
Supported endpoints
Media optimization for Microsoft Teams is only available for the following Windows and macOS endpoints:
- Windows 365 app for Windows via the Microsoft Store (latest version).
- Remote Desktop client for Windows, version 1.2.1026.0 or later (latest version).
- Remote Desktop client for macOS, version 10.7.7 or later. Teams optimizations are enabled by default in version 10.7.7 or later unless you upgraded from a previous version. In this case, you need to enable Teams optimizations in Microsoft Remote Desktop Preferences > General.
Install Teams on non-optimized or custom images
While it's recommended to provision your Cloud PCs with the Windows 10/11 Enterprise + Microsoft 365 images available in the image gallery, you can also configure non-optimized gallery images or your custom images to support Teams. To manually configure an image to support Teams, perform the following steps:
- Create the following registry setting in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Teams:
- Value Name: IsWVDEnvironment
- Type: DWORD
- Value: 1
- Install the latest Visual C++ runtime, required for Teams WebRTC protocol redirection.
Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable latest supported downloads - Install the WebRTC Redirector (websocket) plugin, required for Teams to function properly in a Cloud PC environment with the optimizations.
WebRTC Redirector (websocket) plugin download - Use Microsoft Intune to install Microsoft 365 Apps + Teams (not the standalone Teams desktop application).
Verify that Teams optimizations loaded successfully
To verify that Teams optimizations are enabled on a Cloud PC, perform the following steps:
- In Microsoft Teams, select the ellipses (…) in the menu bar > About > Version.
- Confirm that WVD Media Optimized is listed next to the version.
If media optimizations loaded successfully, the audio devices and cameras available locally are listed in the device menu. If the menu shows Remote audio, perform the following steps:
- Close the Teams app, reopen it, and check again.
- If the devices still don't appear in the device menu, check the Privacy settings on your local PC. Make sure that Allow apps to access your microphone (under Settings > Privacy > App permissions– Microphone) is On.
- Disconnect from the remote session.
- Reconnect and check the audio and video devices again.
Note
To join calls and meetings with video, you must also grant permission for apps to access your camera.
Collect Teams logs for Microsoft support
If you encounter issues with the Teams desktop app in your Windows 365 environment, collect client logs on the Cloud PC under:
%appdata%\Microsoft\Teams\logs.txt
If you encounter issues with calls and meetings, collect Teams Web client logs with the key combination Ctrl + Alt + Shift + 1. Logs are written to the following text file on the Cloud PC:
%userprofile%\Downloads\MSTeams Diagnostics Log DATE_TIME.txt
