Use bins on projects

Completed

If the items you need for a project are stored on bins, it's important that warehouse workers can find them easily, and that the bin content remains up to date when project items are used.

For locations that use bins and aren't set up with directed put-away and pick, Business Central uses a system of default bins to support warehouse handling tasks. When a user creates a job planning line or a project journal line and specifies the item number and location code, the default bin is automatically suggested. You can always choose another bin from the Bin Contents page.

The following scenarios use location NORTH, for which bins are mandatory.

Use bins on project planning lines

Project planning lines are used to plan the sales and usage for a project. For every item you need on a project, you can create a planning line.

When items are stored in a location with bins, you can use the Personalize function to add the Location Code and Bin Code fields.

When you enter a project planning line for an item and you select a location with bins, the default bin is automatically entered in the Bin Code field. If you want to take the item from another bin, you can click the Bin Code field to open the Bin Contents List page to get an overview of the available bins.

The bin code on the project planning line indicates from where you can pick the item, however, you can always change the bin code on the project journal, from where the usage is posted.

Use bins on project journals

You can use projcet journals to post consumption of items that you have on stock. Posting items in a project journal results in item ledger entries and value entries with negative quantities. You can enter project journal lines manually or create them from the project planning lines.

When you want to consume items in a location with bins, the program suggests the default bin and from the bin contents list, you can select another one, considering the availability.

The following scenario demonstrates how to enter a project journal line for an item and select a bin from the bin contents list. A new project, location North, and opening stock for item 1896-S have been prepared in advance. The Location Code and Bin Code field are added on the project journal with the Personalize function.

  1. Select the Search for Page icon in the top-right corner of the page, enter project journals, and then select the related link.

  2. On the first available line, enter April 30, 2021 in the Posting Date field.

  3. In the Document No. field, enter PR010.

  4. In the Project No. field, enter the project for which you want to post consumption.

  5. In the Project Task No. field, select the task for which you want to post consumption.

  6. In the Type field, select Item.

  7. In the No. field, enter 1896-S.

  8. In the Location Code field, select NORTH.

The Bin Code field is entered automatically with the default bin, in the example N02-002. This means that if you post the project journal, a negative quantity is posted on this bin.

If you want to post the item from another bin, you can select the Bin Code field to display the Bin Contents List page. If the item is available on another bin, you can select it to update the Bin Code field on the project journal line.
