Exercise - Read the Copilot usage report and the Agent usage report
Relecloud's leadership readout needs this month's real adoption numbers—not just who has a license, but who's actually using it, and where.
Important
Prerequisites for this exercise:
- A Microsoft 365 tenant with AI Administrator access to Copilot usage reports in the Microsoft 365 admin center.
Usage report data can lag by up to 72 hours; the Agent usage report (currently in preview) updates much faster, within about an hour of interaction.
Task 1: Identify the Enabled-vs-Active gap
- Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center at admin.microsoft.com with your AI Administrator account.
- Go to Reports > Usage, then open the Microsoft 365 Copilot report.
- Note the Enabled Users count and the Active Users count for the most recent complete reporting period.
- Calculate the gap between them. Reflect: Enabled reflects licensing; Active reflects observed use. A wide gap here is exactly what leadership's "is this working" question is really asking about—paying for licenses nobody's using.
Task 2: Review the workload-level adoption breakdown
- On the same report, find the per-app or workload breakdown (Teams, Word, Excel, Outlook, and other apps).
- Identify which app shows the strongest adoption and which shows the weakest.
- Reflect: this is the difference between "adoption is 60%" and "adoption is strong in Teams but flat in Excel"—the second version is what actually drives a targeted follow-up action, not just a headline number.
Task 3: Review the separate Agent usage report
- Go to Reports > Usage > Microsoft 365 Copilot Agent usage (or the equivalent preview report entry point in your tenant).
- Review its adoption numbers for organization-built agents (Copilot Studio or Teams Toolkit-built).
- Confirm this report's population is different from the general Copilot usage report you reviewed in Task 1—it's tracking a specific set of custom agents, not Copilot as a whole.
- Reflect: if leadership's earlier conflicting numbers came from these two reports, both were correct—they just measured different things. That's the puzzle this module opened with, resolved with your own numbers.
You've now read the Copilot usage report's core metrics, drilled into the per-app adoption breakdown, and reviewed the separate Agent usage report—giving leadership a reconciled, accurate adoption picture instead of two conflicting numbers.
