Determine license requirements
Microsoft Teams Phone Standard is the base license that provides all the calling features within Microsoft Teams, and can be purchased with the Microsoft 365 E5 license, bundled with a Calling Plan, or as an additional add-on license. The add-on’s give you the flexibility to add features only for users in your organization who need them, depending on the available PSTN connectivity options.
What add-ons are available for Microsoft Teams?
Here's a list of add-ons licenses for Teams. The add-on licensing options available to you depend on the Microsoft 365 plan you have.

| Communication Credits | Communication Credits provide a monthly pool of minutes that can be used for PSTN phone calls, if all your Calling Plan minutes get used before the beginning of the next month. If you want toll-free numbers for Audio Conferencing, auto attendants, or call queues, you need to set up Communications Credits. |
| Microsoft Teams Calling Plans | If your users need to call phone numbers outside your organization, you can purchase Microsoft Teams Calling Plans to connect to PSTN phone numbers with Microsoft as your PSTN provider. Teams Essentials with Teams Phone is bundled in a few different ways to meet different needs. Teams Essentials can be purchased with:
- Teams Essentials and Teams Phone with Pay-As-You-Go calling
- Teams Essentials and Teams Phone with a domestic calling plan
- Teams Essentials with Phone (requires operator calling plan)
Microsoft 365 Business
If you're a small or medium-sized business (fewer than 300 users), you have a few ways to get voice features:
Buy a Microsoft 365 Business plan and add Teams Phone Standard with Calling Plan bundle and Audio Conferencing.
Buy a Microsoft 365 Business plan and add Teams Phone Standard and Audio Conferencing and use Direct Routing for PSTN connectivity.
Buy a Microsoft 365 Business plan and add Teams Phone Standard and Audio Conferencing, then sign up with a carrier through Operator Connect or Teams Phone Mobile.
Microsoft 365 Enterprise
If you're a large business or enterprise organization (more than 300 users), you have a few ways to get voice features:
Buy an Office 365 E1/E3 or Microsoft 365 Enterprise F1/F3/E3 plan and add Teams Phone Standard, Audio Conferencing, and a Calling Plan or other PSTN connectivity option
Buy an Office 365 E5 or Microsoft 365 Enterprise E5 plan and add a PSTN connectivity option.
