Learning tools and improvement loop

Completed

PowerScribe One supports resident education by embedding learning directly into the report authoring and signing workflow.

Key learning tools

  • Report Comparison enables comparison between different versions of the same report. This helps residents identify changes and understand attending-level refinements.
  • Peer review and quality checks provide structured feedback to improve report consistency and accuracy.
  • Workflow-based learning occurs within the Report Editor and Explorer as residents and attendings draft, review, and finalize reports during routine clinical work.

Watch this video to see how learning tools, Over the shoulder signing, and Report Comparison support continuous improvement in PowerScribe One.

Over the shoulder signing

Over the shoulder signing lets an attending review and sign a report within a resident's active session in the Report Editor.

Key concepts

  • Resident session context: The workflow occurs while the resident is actively signed in.
  • Attending authentication: The attending selects a signing option and enters credentials to sign within the resident session.
  • Attribution and tracking: The report retains the resident's contributions while letting the attending finalize.
  • Queue behavior:
    • Signed reports don't appear in the Sent for Review Today queue.
    • Reports remain available in the Recent queue.
  • Session behavior and access control:
    • The attending must manually sign out after signing.
    • If not signed out, signing capability remains active.
    • The session fully resets only when the resident signs out.

Perform Over the shoulder signing

  1. Confirm the resident has completed a draft report.
  2. Open the report in the Report Editor.
  3. Select the attending sign option.
  4. Enter attending credentials.
  5. Review the report together.
  6. Make edits as needed.
  7. Sign the report within the resident session.

Validate workflow behavior

After signing:

  1. Confirm the report is finalized.
  2. Check that it doesn't appear in Sent for Review Today.
  3. Locate the report in the Recent queue.
  4. Confirm resident contributions are retained.

Manage session security

  1. The attending signs out after signing.
  2. If the attending doesn't sign out:
    • Sign functionality remains active.
    • Attending-level access persists.
  3. The resident signs out to fully reset the session if needed.

Decision point

  • If using a shared workstation, always sign out immediately after signing.

Best practices

  • Treat attending access as temporary privilege elevation.
  • Always end access when the review is complete.

Applied scenario

A resident completes a report and resolves system alerts. The attending reviews the case at the workstation.

  • The attending signs within the resident session after entering credentials.
  • They review and edit the report together in real time.
  • The attending finalizes and signs the report.

After signing:

  • The report doesn't appear in Sent for Review Today.
  • The report is available in the Recent queue.
  • Resident contributions remain in the final record.

The attending signs out before leaving to prevent unauthorized access.

Best practices

  • Use Report Comparison immediately after signing.
  • Focus on why changes were made.
  • Pair visual comparison with verbal explanation.

Applied scenario

A resident reviews a report with an attending using Over the shoulder signing.

After signing:

  • The attending opens Report Comparison from the Report Editor.
  • They compare the draft and final versions.
  • The attending explains:
    • Changes in wording.
    • Adjustments to findings and impressions.

The resident uses the comparison to understand both structure and clinical reasoning.
