Why Project Perception
The speed gap between AI-scale attackers and human-paced defense has a specific cause. Security tools were built to work in isolation, and a person is still the one carrying findings between them. That's fine when attackers also move at human speed. It stops working when they don't.
Security tools were built to work one at a time
Most security tools do their job well in isolation. Some tools collect logs and hunt for suspicious signals. Others watch endpoints for signs of compromise. Others scan systems and produce a report of what's exposed. Each tool is optimized for its own job, and each one produces output that a person then reads, interprets, and passes to whoever handles the next step.
That's how findings actually move through security work: they move through people. Someone reviews a tool's output, decides what it means, opens a ticket, sends an email, or kicks off a query in a different tool. SOAR playbooks can automate specific steps in that chain, but choosing which step runs next, and what its output means for the investigation, still falls to a person. The tools don't close a workflow on their own. People close the workflow.
Attackers don't wait for those handoffs
Autonomous systems can now reason, adapt, and operate continuously. Attackers use them to generate exploits faster, scale campaigns further, and iterate during an intrusion faster than a security team can respond.
By the time a person finishes interpreting one tool's output and starts the next step, an AI-scale attacker is already several moves ahead. The gap isn't inside any one security tool. It's in the space between tools, where a person is still responsible for moving findings from one system to the next.
Speed becomes a coordination problem
Once you accept that framing, the shape of the answer shifts. Making any single tool faster still leaves a person in the middle of every handoff. What has to change is the handoffs themselves. Speed becomes a coordination problem, not just a tooling problem.
