Configure functional location types
This unit describes how to create functional location types in Asset Management.
Functional location types are used to define the functional location requirements such as which assets and how assets are installed on the functional location. Examples of functional location types can include office building, plant, warehouse, and yard. You can associate asset types, functional location attributes, asset attribute requirements, and maintenance plans on the functional location type.
First, when establishing your functional location types, you must create a simple, default functional location. This location is used to create new assets, which is discussed further in the Work with assets in Asset Management for Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management module.
Create a default functional location type
To create a default functional location type, follow these steps:
- Go to Asset Management > Setup > Functional locations > Functional location types.
- Select New to create a new functional location type.
- Enter Default in the Functional location type field.
- Enter the Name of the functional location type, such as Default location.
- To allow assets to be installed on this type of functional location, select Yes on the Multiple assets toggle bar. This selection creates a default functional location.
- Save the new default functional location type.
Create functional location types
To create a functional location type, follow these steps:
Select Asset Management > Setup > Functional locations > Functional location types.
Select New to create a functional location type.
Insert a functional location type ID in the Functional location type field, such as Area.
Enter the functional location type name in the Name field, such as Area.
Select a lifecycle model in the Functional location lifecycle model drop-down menu. Select Standard.
Select Yes on the Multiple assets toggle button if you want to allow multiple assets to be installed on a functional location by using this functional location type.
Note
If you select No, you can only install one asset on a functional location by using this functional location type.
Select Yes on the Update asset dimension toggle button to allow assets that are installed on this functional location to automatically use the financial dimensions that are associated to the functional location. When you change financial dimensions on the Create functional locations page, and the toggle button is set to Yes on the Update asset dimension field on the Functional location type, the financial dimensions are automatically updated on all assets that are installed on that functional location.
The Asset type field is used when you want to automatically create only one asset type to be installed on the functional location with the same ID and name as the functional location that you are creating. As an example, you create a functional location type, such as Area, that only stores forklifts. You can define the Asset type to say, “In this Functional location type, only allow Asset types that are Forklifts.”
Note
If you select an option in this field, the Multiple assets toggle must be set to No.
On the Asset types FastTab, you can identify the asset types that can be installed on the functional location type. If no asset types are added, all asset types may be installed. To identify specific asset types to be installed at this functional location, select Add line and then select the asset types that are listed in the drop-down menu.
Note
If asset types have not been configured in Setup > Asset types, you might not have selections to choose from yet.
On the Maintenance plans FastTab, you can select maintenance plans to be automatically set up on the current functional location type that is selected. To add a maintenance plan to the functional location type, select Add line and then select the maintenance plans from the drop-down menu.
Note
If maintenance plans have not been configured in Setup > Maintenance plans, you might not have selections to choose from yet. If you add maintenance plans in this field, only those added plans can be used on a functional location by using this functional location type.
On the Asset attribute requirements FastTab, you can set up the asset attributes that should automatically be created on new functional locations by using this functional location type. Requirements restrict the assets, and Attributes are defaults. Attribute requirements have a condition that is required before an asset is able to be added in the Functional asset type, for example, Type = Mixer. Select Add line and then select the attribute type from the drop-down menu. If the asset attributes have not yet been created in Setup > Attribute types, you might not have selections to choose from.
On the Permitted types FastTab, you can define the functional location types, such as Yard, Plant, and so on, that are valid to use for sub functional location types that are related to a parent functional location type, which uses the selected functional location type. To see the options that you can select, you must have completed the functional location type setup.
On the Attributes FastTab, select the functional location attributes that should automatically be set up on functional locations by using this functional location type. Attributes are default attributes that will be used at the functional location, such as Type, Color, and so on. Select Add line and select the attribute.
Save the updates that are made to your functional location types.
Note
When asset types, maintenance plans, asset attribute requirements, permitted types, and attributes are added and saved, details for each are displayed on the General FastTab.
