If you want to start using return orders in Business Central, you first need to configure some return-related settings like number series and return reasons.

To set up sales return order management, select the search for page icon in the top-right corner of the page, enter sales & receivables setup, and then choose the related link.

On the General FastTab, you can set up the following:

Return Receipt on Credit Memo You can specify if you want Dynamics 365 Business Central to create Posted Return Receipts when posting Sales Credit Memos.
Copy Cmts Ret. Ord. to Cr. Memo You can specify if you want Dynamics 365 Business Central to copy comments from Sales Return Order to Sales Credit Memo
Copy Cmts Ret. Ord. to Ret. Rcpt You can specify if you want Dynamics 365 Business Central to copy comments from Sales Return Order to Posted Return Receipts.
Exact Cost Reversing Mandatory You can specify if you want Dynamics 365 Business Central to force users to apply the same cost when posting returns. This means that when items are returned to inventory from a sales return, the program values the items at the same cost as the original sale. If an additional cost is later added to the original sale, the program updates the value of the sales return. Selecting this option also means that the program won't allow a return transaction to post unless the Appl.-from Item Entry field on the corresponding order line contains an entry.

On the Number Series FastTab, you can assign number series for the following documents:

  • Return Order Nos.

  • Posted Return Receipt Nos.

  • Credit Memo Nos.

  • Posted Credit Memo Nos.
