Throughout this module, we’ve explored tenets of student-centered learning. Each of these serve as an integral aspect of the framework of student-centered learning—in many cases overlapping in application. What connects them is the goal of deeper learning, which The Hewlett Foundation describes as an “umbrella term for the skills and knowledge that learners must possess to succeed in 21st century jobs and civic life.” In other words, deeper learning is a lifelong development of competencies that are enduring and transferable from one context to another.

Optional extension activity

One way to get started is through conducting empathy interviews with learners. Learn how they’re experiencing school and learning, and let their experiences inform leadership:

Select at least one learner to interview to get a sense of their experience. Here’s a list of questions to ask:

  • What's your relationship been with school? What does being a learner mean to you?
  • What has been an impactful learning experience inside the class?
  • What has been an impactful learning experience that you’ve had outside of the class?
  • What have been some of the least impactful learning experiences that you’ve had? What characterized those experiences?
  • If school were designed for the way you learn, what would school look like?
