Types of tests

Completed

Some tests will always need to be done on every solution, while others will only need to be done in certain solutions.

Generally, tests can be divided into two types:

  • Functional
  • Non-functional

Each type of test represents an incremental testing approach. Some tests are required for any implementation, while others depend on the specifics of your solution, such as its complexity or its performance and security requirements. Some types of test are especially relevant to a specific stage of the implementation, and others run for the lifecycle of the solution.

Depending on your solution design, you might also need more specialized tests, such as smoke tests, data acceptance tests, interface tests, environment tests, reporting and business intelligence tests, device tests, or network and infrastructure tests. Smaller projects are often too small to justify planning these tests separately, but you should still fold their concept and intent into the other types of testing that you run.
