What is cybersecurity?
In simple terms, cybersecurity is the act of protecting sensitive information stored online or on a server. Formed from two words—cyber meaning "computers" and security meaning "free from danger"—cybersecurity is any preventative measure that protects information or processes from being stolen or compromised.
Understanding the importance of cybersecurity is essential in today’s digital world. Everyone's work and personal lives include electronic data that may be vulnerable to malicious attacks and invasions of privacy by individuals wishing to do harm.
The three most crucial components of security make up what is known as the CIA Triad:
- Confidentiality – The right people have access to sensitive information and the wrong people don't.
- Integrity – Only the right people or processes can change sensitive information.
- Availability – Information is visible and accessible whenever needed.
Understanding the CIA Triad and how each part contributes to cybersecurity increases awareness and importance of remaining vigilant in today's digital world.
