Break a large task into smaller steps

Completed

A large task can be difficult to start because it includes many smaller jobs. For example, "get ready for work" may include:

  • Check the work schedule
  • Take a shower
  • Brush teeth
  • Choose clothes
  • Pack lunch
  • Check transportation
  • Find a work badge
  • Leave on time

A person could type:

I start work at 9:00 AM. Make a checklist of what I should do before I leave for work, and suggest a time to set my alarm clock.

Copilot can create a checklist that the person can review and change. The person may add something Copilot did not know about, such as taking medication, bringing a uniform, or meeting a ride.

Include travel time

A schedule should include the time needed to get from one place to another. For example:

My class ends at 1:00 PM. I have an appointment at 2:00 PM. The bus ride takes 35 minutes. What time should I leave?

Copilot can use those details to suggest a time. The person should still check the current bus schedule or another trusted source before leaving.

Include breaks

A plan does not need to fill every minute. Breaks can be added between activities or after a longer task.

Help me plan two hours of homework. Add a 15-minute break after the first hour.

Copilot can add the break to the plan. The person can choose a different break time or take a break earlier if needed.

Change the plan when something changes

Plans often change. The bus may be late. An appointment may move. A task may take longer than expected.

A person can give Copilot the new information:

My appointment moved from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Update my plan.

Or:

Cleaning took longer than I expected. Move grocery shopping to later.

Copilot can suggest an updated plan. The person checks whether the new plan still works.

Use a checklist to track progress

A schedule shows when something may happen. A checklist shows what needs to be done.

Someone preparing for school might use a checklist like this:

  • Finish the assignment
  • Charge the laptop
  • Pack the backpack and charging cord
  • Put lunch in the refrigerator
  • Set an alarm

The person can mark each item when it is finished.
