Virtual Machines

When you're working on research projects, it is helpful to have a basic understanding of cloud computing concepts. In this learning path, you'll study the general terminology and services that of cloud computing, which should be useful to you when you’re working on research tasks. You'll learn how to create virtual machine and how to use it, and how to pick the best storage solution to persist your data.

Learning objectives

Upon completion of this learning path, you'll be able to:

  • Understand the fundamental concepts of the cloud
  • Create virtual machines to run research focused workloads
  • Create and manage the right storage to keep your research data

  • You should be familiar with basic computing concepts and terminology.
  • An understanding of cloud computing is helpful, but isn't necessary.

Modules in this learning path

This module introduces you to the basics of cloud computing and Azure, and how to get started with Azure's subscriptions and accounts.

In this module, you'll examine the various concepts, resources, and terminology that are necessary to work with Azure architecture. For example, you'll learn about Azure subscriptions and management groups, resource groups and Azure Resource Manager, as well as Azure regions and availability zones.

In this module, you'll learn about several of the database services that are available on Microsoft Azure, such as Azure Cosmos DB, Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, Azure Database for MySQL, and Azure Database for PostgreSQL. In addition, you'll learn about several of the big data and analysis services in Azure.

In this module, you'll learn how to take advantage of several virtualization services in Azure compute, which can help your applications scale out quickly and efficiently to meet increasing demands.

Learn about the decisions you make before creating a virtual machine, the options to create and manage the VM, and the extensions and services you use to manage your VM.

In this module, you'll learn about some of the different storage options that are available in Azure Storage services, and the scenarios in which each storage option is appropriate. As you complete the individual units in this module, you'll learn about Azure Blob Storage, Azure Disk Storage, Azure Files, and Blob access tiers.

Learn how to use Azure Storage, Azure SQL Database, Azure Cosmos DB, or a combination of Azure resources for a performant solution in your business scenario.

Create an Azure Storage account with the correct options for your business needs.

Azure provides a variety of disk storage options for virtual machine workloads. Identify the features of capabilities of each type to ensure your application performs optimally.
