Playbill font family

Overview

The idea of having an Egyptian face whose horizontals were thicker than the verticals seems to have surfaced only a few years after the Battle of Waterloo. Designs of this kind were given names like Italienne or, later in England, French Antique. In 1938, the Stephenson Blake type foundry revived this look, with the appropriately named Playbill, and others followed. It seems proper to start with the first and best known.
