What do I need to do to future-proof the connectors in my organization?

  • If the Universal Print Connector is running on Windows Server:
    • Upgrade to Windows Server 2022: This upgrade includes .NET Framework 4.8. This will ensure you also receive additional connector improvements in the future.
    • If upgrading is not possible, remain with the current Windows Server version and upgrade to .NET Framework 4.8.
  • If the Universal Print Connector is running on Windows 10 or Windows 11, you must install .NET Framework version 4.8. We also strongly recommend upgrading to the latest version of Windows 11.

Note

.NET Framework 4.8 or later is required for connector 2.0 to be installed manually or through automatic updates. This .NET Framework update is required for the Universal Print connector to adhere to the latest security and compliance guidance from Microsoft.

To find out whether .NET Framework 4.8 is already installed on a PC, follow the guidance in this article. Alternatively, you can attempt to install .NET Framework 4.8 and it will let you know if it’s already installed.

Why is a major connector update needed?

When the connector was first created during the Universal Print Early Access Release, it needed to support older Windows platforms that Universal Print customers were using then. Today, a significant portion of connector issues customers face are caused by platform limitations that don't exist in more recent versions of the Windows.

Running the connector on more recent versions of Windows gives Universal Print customers a modern connector with better security, reliability, and overall performance. Additionally, it makes it possible to add new connector features that take advantage of the technologies available in modern versions of Windows.

When is the connector 2.0 update happening?

The connector 2.0 update is currently being rolled out. Existing connector PCs that already have .NET Framework 4.8 installed will automatically be updated to connector 2.0 during the month of July 2024. If .NET Framework 4.8 is installed after the automatic update is rolled out, the connector will automatically update to 2.0 the following night.

By the end of July 2024, connector 2.0 will also become available for download from the connector installation link in this article.

Important

Starting September 1st, 2024, connector versions older than 2.0 will continue to function normally. However, the Microsoft customer support team will not be able to assist with Universal Print issues your organization might face until the connector is upgraded to version 2.0.
