Universal Print portal for secure release with QR code

The Universal Print portal is a browser-based experience for releasing print jobs, starting with secure release with QR code. It's the new home for end-user print experiences in Universal Print, delivering new capabilities, broader device support, and future innovations without requiring an app installation.

What is secure release with QR code — and what's changing?

Secure release with QR code is a Universal Print feature that allows users to securely release print jobs held in the cloud only when they're physically present at the printer and scan the printer's Universal Print QR code.

Organizations using Universal Print secure release can now release print jobs directly from a browser through the Universal Print portal. No app installation is required, and existing printers and QR codes continue to work without any changes.

Starting August 18, 2026, the QR code-based secure release experience in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app is retired and replaced by the new Universal Print portal experience.

Users who scan a Universal Print QR code are seamlessly directed to the Universal Print portal, which provides a streamlined browser-based experience across phones, tablets, and desktops. You can preview an early version of the experience by visiting the Universal Print portal.

For administrators

Your existing Universal Print QR codes continue to work with the new portal. No reprinting is needed, and existing printers don't need to be reconfigured.

If you have Conditional Access policies enabled, you may have to configure them to allow the Universal Print portal to avoid user access issues. For details, see Set up the Universal Print portal for your organization.

For users

Nothing changes in how you release your print jobs. Scan the printer's Universal Print QR code, then select the link to open the Universal Print portal and view your pending print jobs. For a step-by-step walkthrough, see Release a print job using the Universal Print portal.
