Microsoft 365 Organizational Data Service acts as the centralized organizational data platform for supported Microsoft services. Once you import organizational data into Microsoft 365 Organizational Data Service, it can be securely distributed to supported applications such as Microsoft 365 Profile, Microsoft Copilot, People Skills, Insights, Viva Glint, and other connected apps.
Use the information below to learn more about each supported app, how it uses organizational data, and the types of business scenarios that can be enabled through Microsoft 365 Organizational Data Service.
Note
You don't have to distribute organizational data to supported apps using Microsoft 365 Organizational Data Service, but doing so enhances their functionality.
Application access
When creating an import in Microsoft 365 Organizational Data Service, you can choose which Microsoft apps receive your organizational data. Each application uses organizational data differently and might require different attributes to support its functionality. Selecting the appropriate apps ensures that organizational data is only distributed to the services your organization intends to use, helping simplify administration and align with data governance requirements.
Microsoft 365
Microsoft 365 Profile helps employees discover people, understand organizational relationships, and access workforce information across Microsoft 365. It provides the people and organizational context used in services such as profile cards, Org Explorer, Microsoft Search, Microsoft 365 Copilot, and agents.
Microsoft 365 Organizational Data Service provides organizational and workforce data to Microsoft 365 Profile, including attributes such as job title, department, manager relationships, organization structure, location, and other profile attributes. Microsoft 365 Profile then makes this information available to downstream Microsoft 365 apps that help users discover people, navigate organizational structures, and understand expertise across the organization.
Data imported through Microsoft 365 Organizational Data Service powers a variety of Microsoft apps that help employees, managers, and leaders find people and expertise, understand their organization, improve AI and agent services, and measure workforce outcomes.
Microsoft 365 Copilot / Cowork
Provides conversational access to organizational and workforce intelligence directly within Microsoft 365 Copilot, helping users discover information, understand organizational context, and get answers in the flow of work.
Copilot Analytics
Helps leaders and administrators analyze Copilot adoption, usage, and impact across workforce segments. Organizational data enables reporting and insights that show how AI is influencing productivity and work patterns.
Consumption Dashboard
Provides visibility into AI usage, adoption, and consumption across reporting structures and organizational hierarchies. Leaders can use organizational data to understand trends, monitor adoption, and manage AI investments.
Live Profile Card / Org Explorer
Enhances people experiences by surfacing organizational information, skills, achievements, certifications, and other employee profile data. This helps employees discover colleagues, understand organizational structures, and receive more relevant Copilot recommendations.

People Skills
People Skills is an AI-driven service that uses AI to generate personalized skill profiles for your employees mapped to a customizable, built-in taxonomy. This service provides a data layer that powers the Skills agent, and enhances Microsoft Copilot, Microsoft 365, and Viva services with contextualized data and skills-driven experiences.

Can be imported from third-party human capital management systems like Workday or SAP SuccessFactors using connectors in the Microsoft 365 admin center
Admins maintain control over what skills data is shared. Learn more.
Microsoft Copilot Dashboard and Insights
Copilot Dashboard is a leader and admin dashboard to prepare for Copilot, drive adoption, and measure the impact of AI across Microsoft 365-bringing readiness, usage, benchmarks, and impact views into one place. Insights, meanwhile, provides behavioral and manager and leader insights through advanced analysis in the Insights web app and analyst workbench to answer deeper organization questions.
High-quality HR data using Microsoft 365 Organizational Data Service allows the Copilot Dashboard and Insights to:
Segment and visualize trends across teams and departments
Map relationships dynamically for accurate reporting and governance
Deliver contextual recommendations that align with organizational goals
Viva Glint
Viva Glint helps organizations measure and improve employee engagement through surveys, reporting, and people insights.
Viva Glint uses organizational data from Microsoft 365 Organizational Data Service to segment employees, target survey audiences, analyze results across organizational dimensions, and generate manager and leadership reporting. Attributes such as organization, department, location, manager hierarchy, and employee demographics provide context for engagement reporting.
Attribute access for each application
Microsoft 365 Organizational Data Service gives administrators control over which app-specific and custom attributes are shared with supported Microsoft 365 and Viva experiences. This allows you to tailor the organizational data available to each application based on your unique business and scenario requirements.
For supported destinations such as Insights and Viva Glint, you can choose which custom and application-specific attributes are distributed to each app. This helps ensure each application receives only the organizational data it needs.
Microsoft 365 global attributes are handled differently. These public organizational attributes are automatically available to Microsoft 365 Profile and the apps built on top of it, including profile cards, Org Explorer, Microsoft Search, Copilot, agents, and the downstream applications onboarded to Microsoft 365 Organizational Data Service. These attributes form the foundational organizational context used across Microsoft 365.
To get the most value from Microsoft 365 Organizational Data Service, consider the Microsoft applications and scenarios your organization plans to use today and those you might use in the future. By centralizing organizational data in a single service, Microsoft 365 Organizational Data Service enables consistent, governed data distribution across Microsoft 365, Copilot, Viva, and other supported applications.
