Assign or unassign a license

You can assign some licenses on windows365.microsoft.com. For full license management, use the Microsoft 365 admin center.

  1. Sign in to windows365.microsoft.com with an administrator account with the License Administrator role.
  2. Select Your organization’s Cloud PCs.
  3. Select the user whose licenses you want to manage.
  4. Select Licenses and apps.
  5. Select licenses that you want to assign to the user, or deselect licenses that you want to unassign from the user.
  6. Select Save changes.
    • When you assign a Windows 365 license, Windows 365 immediately begins creating a new Cloud PC for the user.
    • When you unassign a Windows 365 license from a user or a license expires, the Cloud PC enters into a grace period for seven days. During the grace period, that user can still access their Cloud PC as normal. After the seven day grace period ends, the Cloud PC is deleted.
    • Ending the grace period immediately (Windows 365 Business) If you need to free a Windows 365 license immediately, you don't need to wait for the seven-day grace period to expire. Administrators can manually end the grace period and deprovision the Cloud PC by using the Deprovision now action in the Microsoft 365 admin center. Ending the grace period immediately deletes the Cloud PC and releases the license so it can be reassigned right away.

      Important

Ending the grace period is a destructive action. The Cloud PC, operating system, and user data are permanently deleted. Windows 365 Enterprise licenses in grace period can be managed through Intune.
