Critical Windows zero-day patch (ZDP) updates will begin downloading automatically during out-of-box experience (OOBE) after the user has connected to a network. The user can't opt out of these critical updates as they are required for the device to operate properly. Windows will alert the user that the device is checking for, and applying, the updates.
If a newer version of Windows is available than the version that was released with the device, depending on OS Build, the user may be offered the latest Windows updates during OOBE. The Windows update will be downloaded and installed during the OOBE. This process can take 30 minutes or more. The size of the update, the user's network conditions, and the hardware capabilities of the device determine the download and installation time. During this process, the user is encouraged to keep the PC on and plugged in. OOBE will restart the PC after download and installation to complete the update.
