The AI integration has two operations: prepare the model and summarize a note. Keep them separate so opening the editor doesn't trigger a large download, and selecting Summarize doesn't create another runtime or reload a model for every note.
Add the summarization service
Create a Services folder in your project, add LocalSummarizer.cs, and paste the complete code below.
The complete implementation is shown here. Keep the LocalNotes.Services namespace for the walkthrough, or update it and its references to match your app.

The service contains no WinUI controls. You can call it from your own view model without moving your app's UI or storage code into the AI layer.
Prepare once, then reuse
Preparation initializes the SDK, selects a model from the catalog, downloads it if needed, and loads it for inference. Report these stages separately: a completed download doesn't mean the model is ready to answer.
The sample resolves the qwen2.5-0.5b alias, finds a variant with DeviceType.CPU, and calls SelectVariant before downloading. This demonstrates operation without a Copilot+ NPU. It uses the built-in CPU execution provider, so it doesn't call DownloadAndRegisterEpsAsync to acquire accelerated providers.
The validated model ID is qwen2.5-0.5b-instruct-generic-cpu:4. The suffix is a catalog version, not a statement about quantization. Model availability and the version chosen by an alias can change; check the displayed model ID when reproducing a result.
Only start preparation after the user chooses it. Before that action, explain that setup uses the network and disk space. Keep model weights outside your app installation directory; the SDK manages its model cache.
Don't initialize the SDK from every button click or create a new model for each note. Reuse the loaded model and serialize generation requests. If you already use Foundry Local elsewhere in your app, integrate with that existing lifetime rather than creating a second owner for the singleton manager.
For the underlying model APIs, see Use native chat completions.
Give the model a bounded task
The request separates the summarization instructions from the note content. Each call creates fresh messages, so a previous note doesn't become conversation history.
The service limits input to 4,000 characters and generated output to 256 tokens. It asks for up to three concise bullet points, but the model doesn't always follow that format. These limits keep this example focused on short notes; they don't guarantee that the summary includes every fact. A document's text can also contain instructions that conflict with your prompt.
Treat the output as untrusted text for a person to review, not as a command to run. The sample doesn't give the model tools or permissions to take actions.
Release resources after active work ends
Cancellation is cooperative. Request cancellation, await active generation, and then release the model. Initial model setup doesn't support user cancellation, so allow the window to close instead of holding it open for a download. Don't dispose the runtime while native inference is still using it.
Your app should have one clear owner for the model lifetime. In an app with multiple windows or multiple AI features, closing one page shouldn't unload a model another feature still uses.
Connect the feature to the view model
Replace the entire contents of ViewModels\MainPageViewModel.cs with the code below. If your project doesn't have a ViewModels folder, create it and add the file. In an existing app, you can instead adapt the commands and state to your own view model.

The view model is the boundary between SDK work and UI state. It enables commands when their prerequisites are met, shows errors as errors, and returns the UI to a usable state after cancellation or failure.
Preserve these behaviors when adapting the sample:
| State | UI behavior |
|---|---|
| Model not prepared | Keep note entry available; don't enable generation. |
| Preparing | Show setup progress and prevent overlapping setup requests. |
| Ready with nonempty input | Enable Summarize. |
| Generating | Show progress, enable Cancel, and prevent concurrent generation. |
| Completed | Display a draft summary separately from the note. |
| Canceled or failed | Keep the original note and allow another attempt. |
Don't use .Wait() or .Result on the UI thread. Marshal progress to the UI thread, and don't assume SDK callbacks run on it. If you adapt the code to a different synchronization context, preserve that separation.
Here, the view model constructs Progress<T> on the UI thread and moves native initialization and generation into Task.Run. The generated cancel command supplies a cancellation token to the service. Cancel applies to generation, not to the initial download.
Editing the note clears the previous summary and cancels any request for the old text. A revision counter rejects late progress updates, so even changing the note back doesn't make an old result current again.

The note and summary have visible labels. Dynamic x:Bind expressions specify their binding modes, and note edits update the view model as the user types. Built-in controls provide theme-aware colors and keyboard behavior without custom brush definitions.
Replace the entire contents of MainPage.xaml.cs with the following code:
using Microsoft.UI.Xaml.Controls;

In an existing app, place the note, preparation, summary, and status controls on the page that already owns your text. Bind them to your existing view model rather than replacing unrelated UI.
Connect the window lifetime
Replace the entire contents of MainWindow.xaml with the following XAML. It hosts the page you just added:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>

Replace the entire contents of MainWindow.xaml.cs with the following code. It connects navigation and model cleanup to the window lifetime:

Replace the entire contents of App.xaml with the following XAML to provide the standard WinUI control styles:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<Application
x:Class="LocalNotes.App"
xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"
xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"

<!-- Other merged dictionaries here -->
</ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries>
<!-- Other app resources here -->
</ResourceDictionary>
</Application.Resources>
</Application>
Replace the entire contents of App.xaml.cs with the following code to create the window:
using Microsoft.UI.Xaml;
namespace LocalNotes;
public partial class App : Application
{
private Window? _window;
public App()
{
InitializeComponent();
HighContrastAdjustment = ApplicationHighContrastAdjustment.Auto;
}
protected override void OnLaunched(LaunchActivatedEventArgs args)
{
_window = new MainWindow();
_window.Activate();
}
}
The Assets\AppIcon.ico file referenced by the window comes from the template used in Set up the note editor; keep that generated asset. In an existing app, use your own icon, retain your App and window creation code, and connect the service cleanup to the lifetime of its actual owner.
Run the feature
After copying all the files above, build and run again with the commands from Set up the note editor. The starter page is now a note editor. Confirm that you can enter text before preparing the model.
Choose Download and prepare model, wait for it to complete, enter a short note, and select Summarize. Read the output alongside the source.
You now have the integration in place. Next, check whether it behaves correctly when the input changes, a request is canceled, or the network isn't available.
