Device update journey

The device update journey provides complete, end-to-end visibility into how each Windows device progresses through the update lifecycle. Instead of relying on a generic “In progress” status, this feature breaks the update process into clear, granular phases. As such, it helps IT admins understand exactly where a device is, what it has already completed, and where it may be experiencing issues.

The device update journey is a per-device timeline that traces every stage of an update: from offering, download, install, restart, and completion. Each stage includes timestamps, state transitions, and mapped alerts, giving you a complete and trustworthy sequence of events. This replaces the historically opaque view where devices simply sat in “In progress” without explanation.

How it works

For each device:

  1. The system records all update-related events from the moment an update is offered.

  2. Alerts (e.g., connectivity issues, policy conflicts, or problems with diagnostic data) are correlated directly into the timeline.

  3. You can drill into a device to view state transitions, event timestamping, and linked alerts.

To view this report

  1. Go to the Microsoft Intune admin center.

  2. Select Devices > Windows updates from the left navigation menu.

  3. Select Feature updates > Devices managed for feature updates.

  4. Select the required target release and policy created for the feature update version you'd like to track.

The view shows:

  • Per-device timeline
  • State summaries
  • Mapping alerts

Using the device update journey, you can easily identify cluster patterns (for example, if many devices stop at “Awaiting download,” you might suspect issues with network bandwidth or content delivery). It enables a deeper root-cause analysis across your environment by showing where updates are getting stuck. In combination with alerts and insights, the journey view is a powerful tool to proactively troubleshoot and improve your update success rates.

Summary

Device update journey gives you a transparent, detailed, and actionable view of each Windows device’s update lifecycle. By surfacing granular states, mapping alerts, and visualizing timelines, it enables data-driven troubleshooting and more predictable update outcomes across your tenant.
