To diagnose a timeout detection and recovery (TDR) or device removal, use these tools:
- DirectX Dump Files to inspect the postmortem diagnostics collected when the device was removed.
- Device Removed Extended Data (DRED) to record auto-breadcrumbs and page-fault data for the failing work.
To turn on DRED for an app that PIX launches or attaches to, select Enable DRED Logging in the Launch Process or Attach To Process dialog.

Device removal in GPU captures (deprecated)
PIX used to offer limited analysis of GPU captures that contained a device removal. DRED and DirectX dump files supersede that functionality, and it's deprecated.
