Copy Database - Performance

Hello,

We need to create a new copy of a database on a different server using the PowerShell command "New-AzSqlDatabaseCopy".

Will running this command impact the performance of the live database, especially if other jobs or queries are running simultaneously?

If there are potential performance issues, is there a way to set a timeout for the copy process? Specifically, can we cancel the copy job if it exceeds a certain time limit?

Thanks for your help in advance !

I am not at all familiar with this command, but nothing comes for free, so, yes, it will interfere with the other activity on the source database. Whether it will be actually noticeable - I don't know.

But to play it safe, restore a backup of the database on the same server and run the PowerShell command against the copy.

In which business tier is your source database?

    Hi,Rohit

New-AzSqlDatabaseCopy uses snapshot technology to create data copies during replication. The snapshot creation itself is a quick process and does not significantly affect the database’s performance.

Additionally, the data replication process is asynchronous, meaning it does not block the normal operations of the source database. However, during data transfer, there will be competition for I/O, memory, and CPU resources on the server, which can impact database performance from a server resource perspective.

Therefore, you need to monitor server performance through Azure Monitor to determine if replication needs to be stopped.

    Best regards,
