Hello, We will migrate the VM from vmware esxi to Azure Stack HCI using Azure Migrate tools. Can we use Azure Migrate Tools if the source VM in powered off status? Also Azure Migrate will migrate the VM at the time, or we can do like replication?

Hi @Handian Sudianto ,

please be aware the Azure Migrate feature For Azure Local (Azure HCI) is still in Public Preview.

Using Azure Migrate it doesn't matter if the VM on VMware is running or stopped.

The Process of migrating a VM using Azure Migrate will be 4 steps:

Prepare, Discover, Replicate, Migrate

More details you will find here: Migration phases

This means you have to use replication for migrating a VM to Azure Local (HCI).

This is because of the amount of data that needs to migrate from source to destination.

Hi @Handian Sudianto ,

the risk is limited because the negative effects might be low.

If something went unexpected, for instance the replication had a hick-up, the migrated VM might not run properly on Azure HCI. But as long as the source VM on VMware is still available you can start over again.

So after all 4 phases it's very important to test the VM before deleting the VM in VMware. As long as the VM in VMware is shutdown in VMware and the VM is running on Azure HCI everything is fine. There is no need to delete the VM in VMware immediately after migration step. Just keep the VM off in VMware.

If you are not sure or if you not familiar with Azure Migrate and how it works it might be a good idea to create a "test-VM" in VMware and run a migration with Azure Migrate to Azure HCI first (before starting with the high sensitive/business critical VM).
