I did an inplace upgrade for 4 servers from windows 2012r2 datacenter edition to 2016 datacenter edition, all icons are white after upgrade to windows server 2016

already followed https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/647a03f2-d100-4c11-bfcf-1eb0f5a3a42e/white-start-menu-icons-after-upgrade-from-2012r2-gt-2019-and-2012-gt-2016?forum=ws2019 but it did not help

    In-place upgrades are risky and never recommended. Better to clean install the operating system then migrates roles over to it. You can check here and with manufacturer about support for the operating system you plan to install.

    Might try restoring the image, then try the upgrade again if a clean install is not possible.

    Hi,
    Are the shortcuts still functioning and opening the intended programs?
    Temporally switching the icon around and setting it back as the default one may helpful.

    Inplace upgrades are huge time savers and I have never had them not work. BUT the white icon thing is often a side effect. Run windows updates. That fixed mine. If that doesn't work, rebuild the icon cache.
