We have a 2012 Server with a VM. The VM file with an extension of .avhd. The disk is running out of space. It has 8GB space available. We deleted 8GB data and the performed a compact of the avhd file. Once the server is restarted it reverts back to showing 8GB free, after it was 16GB after the compact. Please advise.

    Hi,

Do you mean the .avhd file is running out of space and now the avhd disk have 8GB free space. And then you deleted 8GB space on the avhd, and perform compaction on the file?

Or you mean the physical disk storing the AVHD file is running out of space, and then you deleted 8GB data on the avhd file and compact the AVHD?

When we compact avhd, it is supposed that the unused physical disk space which store the avhd file get reclaimed. While the avhd file size not change.

When we shrink avhd, it is supposed that the maximum size of the AVHD is reduced.

    Thanks for your time!
    Best Regards,
    Anne
