To get and use an app password, first determine whether this is for a personal Microsoft account or a work/school account, then follow the matching steps.

For a personal Microsoft account (Outlook.com, Xbox, etc.)

1. Make sure two-step verification is turned on for the Microsoft account. This is required before app passwords can be used.
2. Go to the Advanced security options of the Microsoft account dashboard.
3. Scroll down to the App passwords section.
4. Select Create password (or use the Create password link).
5. A long, randomly generated app password is shown.
6. Copy this app password and paste it into the app or device instead of the normal Microsoft account password.
   • For example, in Outlook 2010 or earlier: in Outlook, go to File → Account Settings, open the account, and enter the app password in the Password box.
7. Usually this only needs to be done once per app or device. If asked again later, create a new app password using the same steps.

For a work or school Microsoft 365 account

If two-step verification is enabled and the admin has allowed app passwords:

1. Go to the work or school My Account page: myaccount.microsoft.com.
2. Select Security info in the left navigation.
3. On the Security info page, select Add method.
4. In Add a method, choose App password, then select Add.
5. Type a name for the app that needs the password (for example, “Outlook 2010”), then select Next.
6. Copy the password shown in the Password box.
7. Paste this app password into the app in place of the normal account password, then select Done.

If App passwords or App password is not shown as an option, app passwords are not available in that organization and the IT admin must be contacted.
