storage allocation

I have way more storage than I need on my Microsoft Account, but I am out of storage for my email. Is there a way to allocate some of my storage capacity to my email account? I hope that makes sense. I don't think I should have to buy more storage for email when I'm paying for a LOT of storage that isn't being used. I originally bought the extra storage so that I wouldn't have this probem with my email. (I know I should just delete some of those old messages, but that'll be a project for another day).

Thank you,

Karen

    Hi Karen,

I wish I had a better answer for you, but I am afraid you cannot allocate Storage space to Email space. You may want to delete messages with attachments or do something like this:

I hope this information helps. If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to reach out.

Otherwise, if your problem is resolved, please take a moment to rate the answer. Wishing you good luck!

Email storage and cloud (OneDrive/Microsoft) storage are managed as separate quotas and cannot be reallocated between each other.

Key points from the current Microsoft storage model:

    1. For consumer (personal) accounts:
      • Free accounts get 5 GB of Microsoft cloud storage (OneDrive + some app data) and 15 GB of Outlook.com email storage. These are separate.
      • Buying additional OneDrive/Microsoft cloud storage increases only the cloud storage quota, not the email mailbox size.
    2. Mailbox size limits:
      • Consumer Outlook.com mailboxes are capped at 100 GB when upgraded with a paid Microsoft 365 subscription. This is a fixed limit; extra OneDrive storage does not increase it further.
      • If the email storage quota is exceeded, sending and receiving email stops until mailbox size is reduced, even if there is plenty of unused OneDrive/cloud storage.
    3. What can be done:
      • To increase email storage beyond the free level, upgrade the Outlook.com account with a Microsoft 365 subscription, which provides up to a 100 GB mailbox plus larger OneDrive storage.
      • Once at the 100 GB mailbox cap, the only way to get more email space is to free up mailbox storage (delete or archive mail) or move to an enterprise plan that offers larger mailboxes.
      • Extra purchased OneDrive storage cannot be converted or applied to email storage.

So, storage already purchased for OneDrive/Microsoft cloud cannot be reallocated to the Outlook.com mailbox. To resolve the “out of email storage” situation without deleting mail, the supported option is upgrading to a Microsoft 365 subscription (if not already at the 100 GB consumer mailbox limit); otherwise, mailbox cleanup is required.
