Open the scanner software to the setting where you can choose where to save scans. Choose a destination such as:

C:\Users\your user account\Documents

-or-

C:\Users\your user account\Downloads

These are both destinations where you are able to save scans.

If you have more questions, please remember to include your scanner's exact make and model. Without that information we can only offer generic advice.

    Hi GLEN MITCHELL,

I can understand how confusing it is to be notified that you cannot save a scan result to your PC. Just to make sure we are on the same page and find the most suitable solution, it'd be helpful if you can share: the model of your scanner/printer, which scan app you're using, and your Windows version (10 or 11). While waiting for the answers, I can give some suggestions below:

1 - Check the location settings in your scanner software

    • Look at its menu strip (often located at the top or corner of the app)
    • Find option called Save Location, Destination Folder, Scan To, Save To, or similar.
    • Change the destination to a folder inside your user profile, such as:
      • Documents
      • Pictures
      • Desktop
      • Downloads
      • Or create a new folder.
    • Save the change and try scanning again.

2 - If you cannot find the save location setting in the app

    • Open File Explorer > browse to the folder where scans are being saved
    • Right-click the folder and select Properties > open the Security tab
    • Confirm your account has Write or Full Control permissions
    • If it does not, click Edit > grant the necessary permissions.

3 - Reconfigure the connection with your scan device

    • Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners
    • Select your scanner > Remove device > restart PC
    • Add the scanner again and test scanning.

Also, just wondering, was the scanner working normally before and this error just appeared suddenly, or is this the very first time you’re using it? That information would help narrow down whether it's a setup problem or caused by a change in your system.
