In Windows Server 2008 there was an introduction of a new way to install Windows server in a Core Installation. Server core was a streamlined installation of Windows Server, that provided a “headless” server option. However, there needed to be some improvements on increased functionality. In Windows Server 2008 R2, the Server Core installation now includes support for the .NET framework, this enables new role capabilities like IIS and management possibilities with PowerShell.
