Datacenters are all the rage at the moment – here is one I found in a suitcase earlier today. Not by the side of the road though, I found it on Dave Ohara’s blog.
This suitcase packs a datacenter punch though with two servers running dual-core, 2.5 GHz Intel processors (Harpertown), 32 GB of memory, 4 TB of disk space for storage, a power supply, a 5-port Gigabit Ethernet Switch and even some solid-state drives into a metal box. The box consumes about 325 watts. Nice. It’s be cool if I could pop Azure on that and run my own private cloud :)
It turns out this is a Dell suitcase that that Jimmy Pike, Director at Dell’s Data Center Solutions, uses to demo their wares.
It’s a far cry from my first PC that had an 8Mhz processor, 512k of RAM and 40GB 40mb hard disk.

Hi Steve, Was your first PC 40GB HD or 40MB? 40 GB sounds far too big for that time :)
