Microsoft, some time ago, joined the Personal Supercomputing era by introducing Windows Compute Cluster Server (CCS) back in 2006. You are able to run supercomputer like tasks on standard Windows hardware.
This hardware is soon becoming a bit smaller. According to BBC News, "Hand-held supercomputers" are on it way. "Engineers at the University of Edinburgh studied the behaviour of wires which were 1,000 times thinner than human hair."
