Upgrade a Public IP from Basic to Standard SKU associated to a VPN Gateway P2S

Question

I need to know how to Upgrade a Public IP from Basic to Standard SKU associated to a VPN Gateway P2S (Basic SKU Gateway) and if VPN Gateway SKU Basic support the Standard Public IP Address. Thanks.

Upgrading Public IP from Basic to Standard SKU:

1. Identify the Basic SKU Public IP: Determine which Basic SKU public IP address you need to upgrade.
2. Create a Standard SKU Public IP: If you need a zone redundant public IP address, create a new Standard SKU public IP address using the Azure portal, PowerShell, CLI, or ARM template. If zone redundancy is not required, you can proceed with the upgrade options.
3. Plan for Downtime: Create a migration plan that includes planned downtime, as the upgrade process will cause some downtime.
4. Upgrade Process:
   • Disassociate the Basic SKU Public IP: Detach the Basic SKU public IP from the VPN Gateway.
   • Associate the Standard SKU Public IP: Attach the newly created Standard SKU public IP to the VPN Gateway.

Now, regarding the VPN, currently, the Basic SKU VPN Gateway does not support Standard SKU public IP addresses. You would need to upgrade the VPN Gateway SKU to a higher tier that supports Standard SKU public IP addresses.

In this case, you are correct that Microsoft has been working on simplifying the process of upgrading from Basic to Standard SKU public IPs. However, as of the latest information, the migration is not fully automatic and still requires some manual steps.

Microsoft provides guidance on how to upgrade your Basic SKU public IPs to Standard SKU, but it involves disassociating the Basic SKU public IP and associating a new Standard SKU public IP. There may be future updates or tools to streamline this process further, so it's a good idea to keep an eye on official Azure updates.
