The desktop is useful again...
I don't know about you guys, but ever since the release of Windows 7 my desktop has become a barren canvas I occasionally glance upon when I run out of open windows. The reason for this is the ability to pin programs to the taskbar and arrange files in to libraries, eliminating the need to clutter my desktop with all sorts of icons. Enter Omnimo UI, a skin for Rainmeter, which in turn is a very customizable resource meter for your desktop. Omnimo UI uses the look and feel of the upcoming Windows Phone 7 interface to bring the tiles UI to your desktop. The end result is a gorgeous, clean and effective desktop with loads of nifty little tiles (or panels, as the creator call them).
After playing around with Omnimo UI and Rainmeter for a while, my desktop now looks like this:

The UI is fully customizable and the only comment I have is that alignment might be an issue at times. I just ended up disabling the snapping functionality and manually aligning the tiles (hence the occasional shift of a pixel or two in some tiles).
So, if you're looking for a way to make your desktop useful (and gorgeous) again, check out Omnimo UI over at deviantART. You won't be disappointed!
