Integration of TechNet Blog User Account with TechNet Forums Profile
On January 27th the TechNet Blog user accounts merged with the TechNet Forums Profiles.
This was part of a profile centralization effort, which consolidated our users’ profile suites down to a single instance that can be used across the TechNet websites.
What is the benefit?
- The main benefit of a centralized TechNet Profile system is to simplify the online community experience.
- The single Profile model gives you the ability to navigate seamlessly through not only the TechNet Blogs, but also through the TechNet Forums.
How does it work?
There is one of two options you will encounter as a previous user of TechNet.
- If you have an existing blog user account but do nothave a TechNet Profile, the system will use your pre-existing Blogs account to create a TechNet Profile.
- When you make your initial visit the Blogs after the update, you will notice that some aspects of your profile (your avatar, for example) may have changed.
- To update this information, you can simply click on your name in the site header, which will take you to your TechNet Profile page, where you can customize your settings.
- Once your TechNet profile has been created, you will be given a chance to review and change your Blog site specific settings.
- If you already have both a blog user account as well as a TechNet Profile, you will notice that the TechNet Blogs will now display your TechNet Profile information.
- Clicking on your name in the site header will take you to your TechNet profile page, where you can view and edit your profile.
- The Settings link will now take you to the Blog Site Settings page. It is here where you will be able to manage any Blogs specific settings such as: editor, type, date, format, time zone and so forth.
- From the settings page, you will also be able to manage and find your Friends.
For those who don’t yet have a user account or a TechNet Profile, you will be guided through the new TechNet Profile creation process. From that point forward, TechNet will use the TechNet Profile automatically.
You are not required to create an TechNet Profile to read a blog or other TechNet content. You will need a profile to add TechNet Community Content, and some blogs will require a Profile to post a comment there.
We are very excited about bringing the Blogs to the TechNet Profile. This is a tremendous step forward which will make an already awesome community that much richer!

Why on earth I cannot use my Live ID and I have to use this ficticious alias/name?! Why do you complicate things? I tried to reset my password (with success), use the procedure you described above but nothing... I keep getting a message saying that the account name does not exist! Darn!Anonymous

Hi, John. I'm worried this might affect my access to the sites. At present I can successfully access Technet Forums, but something went wrong with my Technet Blogs ID and I can't access the site. I hope the integration enables me to access both and not lock me out :( ThanksAnonymous
January 26, 2011
It should be ok, but if something doesn't work after the merge then use the site feedback link on the home page to let us know and we'll assist in restoring your access.Anonymous

If I try to sign in to the site now, I get redirected to an error page telling me that I can't create an account because my email address is already in use - by my own account! After getting that error message, I have to delete all cookies for the technet.com domain before I'm allowed to read the blogs. If I don't, every attempt to access a page gets redirected to the same error message. I only have one Windows Live ID, and it's the one associated with the account that's preventing me from creating an account. The instructions to log out, log in as the Live ID associated with the account and then change the email address are complete rubbish! Why is this so difficult? What can't one Microsoft site (TechNet) work with another Microsoft site (Windows Live)? How can you expect anyone else to use your service if you can't get it right yourselves???Anonymous

Hi, John. I contacted TechNet feedback regarding the ID issue, they sent me an e-mail on Feb 1st, and I replied to them with the details. However, they still haven´t got back to me since, and I'm unable to sing in to ANY TechnetBlog :( I sent a follow up message on Feb 03rd, but haven't receive a reply yet. Hope you can provide some advice on how to proceed. Thanks and best regardsAnonymous

You're doing better than me - I still haven't heard anything from them. Either this "integration" caused so many problems they're snowed under, or they just don't care about their users.Anonymous

hi how to geta Technet ID for Blogging?Anonymous
February 08, 2011
Unfortunately I get the same error trying to log on to the Blogs site. I have been registered to TechNet (Subscriptions etc) and to the Blogs site with the same email address and LiveID (wasn't that the whole idea of the "merge"?). But now I can only log on to TechNet as always, when when logging on to Blogs I get the error "Sorry! We can't create your account right now. Your email address is already in use by another user, eliashan" which is of course... me :) I have already reported this through Site Feedback, but the first answer I received after a couple of days indicated that they did not understand the problem, so I replied and I'm waiting for a new suggestion.Anonymous
February 10, 2011
How did they fix it in your case mdgrkb? They just replied to me for the second time, suggesting some actions I can't say I understand: "Could you please create another account on TechNet blogs so that we can reassign those posts to your new sign in name. Or else could you please suggest some other email id so that I can change the id for the name." All I want is to use a single LiveID for TechNet and TechNet Blogs, not create a new account!Anonymous

Free Self Service Active Directory Account Unlock and Reset Solution 1 mins. ago (permalink)
....I’m testing a new self service suitefor Active Directory,(Call2unlock). It is based on IVR and a web config tool.
This is the Link. http://www.call2unlock.com/
So far I’m impressed, the configuration is simple and the users just need to dial by phone to an internal extension to unlock or reset their accounts. It can be integrated to any PBX.
The good part is that they have a free version up to 500 users.Anonymous
