MOSS has no indexers

one of the problems you might face during MOSS installation is missing a role such as Search indexing service...

 when you try to create a new SSP, you'll get an error saying that "no indexers" and the drop down list for the indexers is disabled!!!

The solution simply is when you installed MOSS on the box, you forgot to install the search indexings,

 so as a solution, you need to either uninstall MOSS (don't delete the DBs) then reinstall with the indexing service again...

another solution is to add another box to the farm that will hold the indexers...!!!!

 

Note: uninstalling MOSS will not remove your configurations....

    I was able to enable the Search services on the installation and then this error went away. I did not have to reinstall

    How did you do that? if you went for the first option, which is installing front end server only! you will not be able to install other roles... unless you have different method to to this...

    I went into "Central Administration > Operations > Services on Server" and started "Office SharePoint Server Search" and "Windows SharePoint Services Help Search." Then I returned to creating the new SSP and the Indexer appeared as a choice. On my VM, I installed SQL 2005 then MOSS. I told SharePoint that everything should run on this one machine. Maybe you took a more narrow path and didn't get the Search Service.

    "Office SharePoint Server Search" and "Windows SharePoint Services Help Search" don't show up on my  Services on Server list. How do I get them to be on the list?

    Stefano, when you installed SharePoint, did you choose complete? or Web Front End?

    if you are missing the "Office SharePoint Server Search" Do not uninstall and reinstall MOSS. Instead Start  --> Microsoft Office Server --> SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard Cick ok through all. That will make sure all the services are installed properly. Restart and you should have the Office SharePoint Server Search option available.

    Hi, In case it is helpful to anyone, I had the 'no indexers' problem and the solution was re-running the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard (as has been suggested above). I realised afterwards the reason I had the problem was because my server was a virtual development server with a DHCP-assigned address and, due to a period out of the office, the IP address had changed and the index server no longer showed up in the 'Servers in farm' page.
