Step 1: Setting Up the Contoso Domain

Applies To: Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008 R2 with SP1

To prepare your Remote Desktop Licensing (RD Licensing) test environment in the CONTOSO domain, you must complete the following tasks:

  • Configure the Remote Desktop license server (RDL-SRV)

  • Configure the server to license

    • Configure the RD Session Host server (RDSH-SRV)

    • Configure the RD Connection Broker server (RDCB-SRV)

Warning

An RD Licensing server running the Beta version of Windows Server 2008 R2 with Service Pack 1 will only install, issue, and track the availability of licenses for a deployment that contains Remote Desktop Services roles running on the Beta version of Windows Server 2008 R2 with Service Pack 1. An RD Licensing server running Windows Server 2008 R2 will only install, issue, and track the availability of licenses for a deployment that contains Remote Desktop Services roles running Windows Server 2008 R2. Deploying the Beta and released versions of Remote Desktop Services roles in the same environment, will result in connections being denied, and a licensing protocol error will be displayed.

Use the following table as a reference when setting up the appropriate computer names, operating systems, and network settings that are required to complete the steps in this guide.

Important

Before you configure your computers with static Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, we recommend that you first complete Windows product activation while each of your computers still has Internet connectivity. You should also install any available critical security updates from Windows Update (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=47370).
