Building the Web Tier

For the latest version of Commerce Server 2007 Help, see the Microsoft Web site.

Building the Web tier involves installing the required software on each Web server. After you install the software and configure the Web servers, you unpack the Web site and perform post-deployment tasks, such as setting permissions, verifying functionality, and tightening security.

A Commerce Server Web tier contains the following components.

Servers and hardware

Quantity

Domain controller

1

Web server

2 or more

Non-clustered database server running BizTalk Server

1 (optional, to support Commerce Server adapters)

Firewall

2

Load balancer

1

Network switch

1

Network cables

8 or more

Follow these steps when you build a Web tier:

  1. Set up your network switch, load balancer, and firewalls. Wire your network, install the Windows operating system on the Web servers, and define your network settings. For more information, see Configuring the Commerce Server Network.

  2. Configure the Web tier domain controller. For more information, see Configuring a Domain Controller.

  3. Configure each Web server. Before you configure each Web server, make sure that you configure the business management server in the data tier. For more information, see Configuring the Web Servers.

  4. Configure the Web tier BizTalk server. For more information, see Configuring the BizTalk Server.
