Folders and Metadata

There is a lot of discussion out in the blogosphere (Dustin and Mr. Simser) about the pros and cons of folders versus metadata. This was something I looked at in one of my first blog posts as part of a discussion about Document and Folder level permissions. Just in case it contributes to the discussion I thought it might be useful to link it back in:

Document and Folder Level Permissions

I didn't see much of folder pros in Dustin's and Bil's pieces! In fact only cons.

The only time I use, or ever mention to clients to use folders in documents libraries is if the number of folders is limited to just 2 or 3 and the number of documents is just as small.

For example: If you had a site template with a document library to hold 2 or 3 different types of documents for things like [techincal] and [branding] then you can get away with it.

If there is a need for a lot of different views then it makes sense.  The problem is the same everywhere I go - "But we're used to folders", we can do it fast!

I would never recommend creating an actual "Tree View" of several layers.
