OneNote 2007 Word Count

Here is another powertoy from the OneNote team, think of it as some love from the OneNote team on Valentine's Day. Jeff Cardon from the OneNote Test team wrote this powertoy which will count the number of words you have on a page, just by the click of the button. Here is what you should do:

  1. You need to have the .Net 2.0 Framework installed
  2. Download the application from here: OneNote2007WordCount.zip
  3. Run setup
  4. Close and restart OneNote
  5. Look for this in the toolbar:

  1. Click the button!

This will launch the following app which counts the number of words on the page, title, ink and more! Just like this:

Download now: OneNote2007WordCount.zip

Now you can get a word count in OneNote, nice work Jeff! If any of you have problems or questions please let us know by leaving feedback below.

Thanks so much for this powertoy -- it's the one thing I've requested of MS where this, my "everything" tool, is concerned. As a writer, I really needed a word count tool. Am downloading it now and can't wait to install!

BTW, I'm running XP, not Vista, but I am using OneNote 2007. I am still on the Trial (waiting to get paid to pay myself) -- would that matter?

Elizabeth - Please uninstall the powertoy.  Then reinstall it and choose to install for "All Users" and then see if it works.  Please let us know.

No go. I uninstalled, then reinstalled checking to install for Everyone. When I click on the icon, I get an hourglass, and then the icon grays out. Any other ideas? Sorry to complicate matters . . . (I hesitate to post my email address on a public forum, but if you want you can go to my website www.lunday.com and find my email addy there.)

Dan- I am having the exact same problem with Word Cound as Elizabeth. Did you ever figure out how to resolve it? Could you please post the answer if you did in case others run into the same issue

The only suggestions I have are to make sure that you install the powertoy for "all users".  Hope that helps.

Same as the others:  Install word count, make sure all .net updates are in (try to, at least:  the  web site and online documentation are utterly inscrutable unless you don't need them because you already know it), click word count, it goes gray and nothing.  Uninstalled it, reinstalled it, did everything mentioned in here, and it just does not work.  Neither does "find and replace" or "sort sections."  Click, gray, nothing.  Nothing nothing nothing.  Frustrated?  You bet.  Can anyone help me make the best piece of software on my machine even better?  Thanks.

Any chance of enhancing this to count a selection on a page if text is selected instead of all words on a page. This would help a lot with editing things to fit word counts.

Hiya guys, Thanks for a wonderful app. Had the same problem as the previous posters at first though: the button would just turn grey whenever I tried to use it, but I followed the advice given (uninstalled, then installed for everyone) and (now maybe this is the trick) installed through the .exe installer, instead of the .msi. Hope this is of any help to the rest of you! Greetings, Mike

Unfortunately, mine still doesn't work. Like the others, I get the button but when I press it, it grays out and nothing happens. I switch to other pages and it remains grayed out until I close and reopen OneNote. I've uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled, set to Everyone and used the .exe to install, without result. Did anyone manage to get this to work after having this issue? I'm on XP SP2, and using OneNote 2007 (trial) with Office 2003. Any help would be gratefully received. Will

This tool is great but a missing feature is to provide all these statistics for a selection. Currently it only provides statistics for the whole section. Thanks again for this great tool

It's a very good toy but what if I need to count all the words - not just the words on the current page?

This apparently installed incorrectly. I'm not even seeing the tool bar even in customize. Where do the files belong? They installed in a folder of their own, directly in Program files, not in the Office folder anywhere. I'm sure I could get it to work if I knew which folder the files should actually be in, but I've tried several I'm familiar with, to no avail. Anyone know where they go? I'm running Office 2007, on XP SP3.

It is a nice tool, but I think that selection count is a must have for any word count app. Is that a possible update in the future?

Hi, this is a great tool, but after I install it (and I installed for "All Users") I can't find the new icon that is supposed to show up.  I verified have the .NET framework (3.5 SP1) installed.  My first thought was that perhaps an assumption was made about which toolbars are enabled, but looking at the screenshot above the new icon appears to be part of the "Standard" toolbar, which I have enabled, and clicking on the more arrow to try to add buttons for the "Standard" toolbar I do not see the above icon anywhere. Is there another way to access this functionality, like maybe by a menu or something?  I am really disappointed. Also, I agree with the comments above about being able to comment on a seciotn.

Err whoops, that should have been "count the words in a selection", not "comment on a seciotn".

I've installed this add-in with .Net framework 3.5. It doesn't work for me. On cicking the icon, it greys out and nothing happens. Is it because the .Net version is 3.5 and not 2? Please help.

Works great. Would be even better if one has the option of choosing to count all words on one page, in one section, in the selection, or in page subgroup.
