Windows Vista and Feeds
As noted pretty much everywhere on the web, Windows Vista launched (for businesses) last week.
Windows Vista includes IE7 and the Windows RSS Platform, and is therefore the first Windows operating system to ship with built-in support for RSS (and the first OS of any kind to have RSS support built-in as a native platform component).
Windows Vista is, in fact, the fulfilment of a promise we made over a year ago at Gnomedex 5.0: Longhorn loves RSS.
In addition to the reading experience in IE7, and the platform features, Windows Vista also include the new Windows Sidebar, which ships with a Feed Headlines gadget.
The team that built the gadget have written up a great post on how the gadget was built, and how they leveraged the RSS platform to make development much easier for themselves.
Read their post here: Building the Feed Headlines Gadget.
In case you haven't seen the gadget in action, the screenshot below shows the gadget after the user has clicked on a headline (I've configured it to show the headlines from the MSNBC News feed).
Many thanks to the folks on the Sidebar team that developed such a great gadget, as well as to Chrix Finne, who interned on the IE RSS team as a PM this past summer, and helped out the Sidebar team with feature design for this gadget.
- Sean
Note: Apologies to readers who downloaded an earlier version of this post, which used a photograph taken by Niall Kennedy and posted on flickr.com. He did not appreciate the usage, and replaced it with a different image. I forgot to include an attribution, which I had fully intended to do, but for which I apologise to him.

Hey, I bet he did it for the lulz. Nah, OK, more seriously, perhaps his way of dealing with this issue wasn't stellar or gentlemanly, but you can't blame Niall for not getting to the point. I guess this incident highlights everything that's wrong with copyrights nowadays.Anonymous

How exactly is an RSS reader connected to the functions of an OS ? isn't it another way to use a dominant position to impose MS on another market. Why don't you just launch an RSS reader that people may use separately from the OS instead of overweighting the OS with tools that are not necessary there ?Anonymous

I normally don't use intenet slang, but I think that OWNED sums this up nicely. That's what you get for hotlinking images without permission and "forgetting" to give credit.Anonymous

Both parties are sort of wrong. This blog was definitely wrong to reference a file hosted by someone else and leech their bandwidth, copyright issues notwithstanding. Niall was wrong to use the image that he did, but it was well within his rights. Besides, what's to say he didn't simply use the same filename for a different picture, without realizing that it wasn't being used? Obviously not what happened here, but that's one of the dangers of hotlinking.Anonymous

I bet this site gets a lot of traffic. What were you thinking leaching his bandwidth? If 100,000 people view this page a day that bandwidth would really add up and he would have to pay for it. I edo not blame him for being upset.Anonymous

RE: Firefox fanboy. Comming to a microsoft blog to talk about how much you think firefox rules or 0wNz doesn't make you cool. If you didn't notice IE7 is a pretty good browser. Sure they have added tabbed browsing, and some might say they are copying firefox with that addition. I say so what? If it works it works, and in IE7 it seems to work better then firefox. Not to mention that most of the new firefox themes for version 2.0 are quite ugly. I do have firefox installed. I use both browsers to check cross browser design when I'm making a new webpage. Yeah, and let's face it the inability for firefox to add the css image styles is just ridiculous. How hard can it be? Why not include them? Same with custom color scroll bars. Either way my only complaint about IE7 is that I haven't yet seen a way to skin it.... Don't get me wrong it looks good as is, but I would like to have a go at making my own skin for it. One more thing Mr.Fanboy just to clear this up for you since I'm sure you are just waiting to come back here just to say use 1inuX n00b or some thing else along those lines. I do use linux. Slackware/XP MCE dual boot. Linux is on my comp for development purposes only as I do not like most win 32 development environments. Anyway there is a pic still out there that depicts what happened here, and a link available from neowin (d0t) net .Anonymous
December 08, 2006
Sorry for the double post all but I forgot to add that firefox fanboy probably wouldn't be able to notice just how much more evolved IE7 has become in comparison to IE6 because he is probably running a pirated copy of windows. lol. People complain about not having this, and that in their browsers, and other software but when it comes down to it they are most likely using a "free" to them software in the first place. By free I meant because they simply downloaded it.Anonymous

December 08, 2006
The last post was of bad taste, and that was my sole opinion. I would never post something like this in news, and sites that do so are the whole reason this got blown so out of proportion. RSS support in Vista is excellent, and I completely agree with the rest of the post. Vista has been a giant step forward in RSS support.Anonymous

There we go, we CAN conduct ourselves in the proper manner.Anonymous
December 08, 2006
I believe I was conducting myself properly. Well I might have been able to leave out calling him a firefox fanboy. But I would like to point out that rss feeds are ironically responsible for so many hit's to this page. I don't run neowin. I left the link because that is how I myself ended up here, and I find the what the original image owner did to be quite funny. Was it in poor taste? Yes, I do believe it was. Was it funny? Once again I have to say yes. Some of us have a sense of humor. Maybe what the image copyright holder did wasn't exactly funny to some people but at the same time it will teach some a lesson. If you are going link to an image at least ask permission, and if permission can't be obtained at least put the image on your OWN server. That way you can avoid these type of problems of using up peoples bandwidth. If he would have just copied the image in the first place the original photographer would most likely have never even known. Not to say that copying peoples images is the right thing to do but you would be less likely to get caught, and avoid these types of situations.Anonymous

Someone else below asked this already. I am getting nailed with Spam in my website for our blog website. Is there anyway to stop this? To change the feed open the site you want the feed to in IE Explorer 7.
- click the orange rss feed manager to bookmark the site(you may need to right click the toolbar, customize, and add the feed from the list)
- Then open the gadget, click the wrench, and select the name of the site you bookmarked in step one.

How exactly is an RSS reader connected to the functions of an OS ? isn't it another way to use a dominant position to impose MS on another market. Why don't you just launch an RSS reader that people may use separately from the OS instead of overweighting the OS with tools that are not necessary there ?Anonymous

finally better, improved Vista could be fasterAnonymous
July 23, 2008
I think VISTA is a notable improvement over XP, although many would disagree. Where I think they've gone wrong with VISTA is only offer better security solutions with the higher (and more expensive) versions and offer very little in terms of networking/security in the basic versions (well, they provide only basic options). I think this was a mistake, and one of the reasons why I have finally moved to Linux instead. Other than that, VISTA is a better operating system than XP.Anonymous

Hello, Not in the registry but you could copy the default feed headlines gadget to your user gadgets directory. Then edit the js file. I believe there are global variables in the first 20 lines one for an array of items the other for the names corresponding to that array. TomasAnonymous
