Totoro
We watched Miyazaki's My Neighbor Totoro last night. It's a story of two young girls with a hospitalized mother and a working father who move to a new neighborhood and discover the gigantic Totoro living under a nearby tree. Don't know how to explain what Totoro is - a giant creature invoking undeniable images of Pokemon. I liked it, but like many of Miyazaki's cartoons I ended up asleep before the sucker ended. Even my extra strong iced mocha wasn't enough. Anyhow, this all started with a recommendation to see Spirited Away from Endo-san. That was ok, a little bizarre, but in a good way. I actually prefer Kiki's best, but we still have Mononoke and a few others to go. Hurray for Netflix.

It is a bit painful to see in the same post the words "Miyazaki" and "Pokemon" together. Never mind the fact that Totoro pre-dates the Pokemon by several years, I wouldn't even start a comparison given the completely different levels. Also, falling asleep on Totoro... hard to believe. I have seen all of the movies directed by Miyazaki and all of the Studio Ghibli movies, most of them more than four times, always with renewed pleasure. I am soooo looking forward the new one, to be released in Japan next November. - Anonymous

Just don't watch mononoke with anyone under the age of 15 - it's too rough for them - very graphic violence. - Anonymous

I have to say I winced when I wrote that Pokemon reference as well. I almost took it out, but decided to leave it I had no better words for what a Totoro is. That new film does look neat. There's an article in this month's Wired (on Miyazaki as well as the guy who did Ghost in the Shell and the guy who did Akira), which mentions the new film. Maybe you saw it. - Anonymous
