Credit card compliance risks for SMBs using Windows Server 2003 after 14 July 2015

If you're a small or medium-sized business who is running Windows Server 2003, it’s time for an upgrade! The software is reaching End of Support on 14th July 2015. Here’s why you should upgrade and what you should do next.

Business has changed since 2003

The business world has changed dramatically in the past 10 years. Windows Server 2003 has been a trusted ally for over a decade, but there are better ways to deliver business expectations and possibilities.

Wait, how do I know if I have Windows Server 2003?

Windows Server 2003 is an operating system for servers – a more powerful version of the operating system that you run on your desktop or laptop. It handles networking, Internet and intranet hosting, databases, messaging apps and more for your business.

If you’re not sure if your business is running Windows Server 2003, ask your IT partner or you can find a Microsoft partner.

What happens if I don’t upgrade?

From 14th July 2015, Microsoft will no longer offer security updates, support or technical content updates for Windows Server 2003. The result? Your systems will become more expensive to run and vulnerable to security threats and downtime.

Outdated software also creates compliance risks for your business. For example the The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) states that companies must “Ensure that all system components and software are protected from known vulnerabilities by having the latest vendor-supplied security patches installed. Install security patches within one month of release”. The penalty for not doing this could result in fines or the bank terminating your relationship/increasing transaction fees. 

What should I do next?

You should talk to your IT partner about upgrading your server software to Windows Server 2012 or Microsoft Azure.
