Happy Birthday Dad v85.0

Today is my dad’s eighty-fifth birthday. It was my intention to travel to Vermont to surprise him and take him to dinner, but a recent illness renders long-distance travel ill-advised in the short term.

So he and I will have to settle for the telephone.. and a birthday card.. and a blog entry.

Mark Twain has a famous quotation attributed to him:

When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.

So it was between my dad and me. Now that he’s eighty-five and I’m pushing fifty, it’s hard not to regret my approach to those years in which he “manifested ignorance.”

Even though we were both doing exactly what we were supposed to do, time is always shorter today than it was yesterday.

My advice? Plan accordingly.

Happy Birthday, Dad. I love you.
