IE7 for Windows XP Launches Today

After lots of late hours and a few pre-release builds, the IE Team is happy (and a bit relieved) to say that the final version of Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP has arrived. You can now download IE7 for Windows XP in English from either the IE site or the Windows Download Center. Look for IE7 in other Windows-supported languages over the coming weeks.

 

We expect millions of customers will upgrade to IE7 because it’s safer and easier. Some e-commerce and financial services companies like Paypal and VeriSign are endorsing IE7 because of its improved security for online transactions.

 

For those of you who haven’t heard yet, we’re going to start distributing IE7 in English as a high-priority update thru Automatic Updates. If you're an IT professional and have customers who want to manage their internal deployment of IE7, you should recommend they have blocking measures in place by 1 November. We think it’ll take several months to complete the distribution worldwide.

 

The IE Team still encourages Windows XP users to upgrade to Windows Vista when it becomes available to receive the additional benefits of IE7 in Windows Vista, such as parental controls and Protected Mode. Windows Vista is targeted to be available to volume license customers in November and all other customers in January 2007, although as we’ve said before, the exact delivery date will be driven by the quality of the final product.

 

And finally, if you run into any glitches with IE7, we’ll be supporting it with free, unlimited phone support for consumers throughout the product life cycle. So upgrade with confidence and let your friends and family know how secure and easy the web can be with IE7.

    Nick ty for answer, one more issue, we are using JDE open world... it's not normally working with WEb interface under IE7, some buttons it not working properly... may be I can ask you by e-mail? my mail just in case a_burlachenko at mail.ru

    That's great news. Congratulations on the release. We run WSUS here. Is there any way to force WSUS to fetch IE7 immediately so we can roll it out ASAP? Tom

    Hey Alexey:  The answer is on the IE blog at http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/08/30/730878.aspx. "IE6SP1’s support policy will not change when IE7 ships.  Everywhere that IE6SP1 is supported today, IE6SP1 will continue to be supported until the OS it ships with expires."

    is IE team plan to continue support IE6? I'm noties at Russian part of i-net (RU-net), exactly after that news was published a lot of articles about how to prevent installing IE7, as I understand the peoples not ready right now migrate to IE7...

    Im going to have to organise my favourites menu before I upgrade to IE7, my favourite menu is like a trash can I must have about 1000 entries in it already. I wish there was a weekly favourite feature where I could go back and see my favourites added on weekly basis like the browser history menu. That would be nice.  If it would sort favourites by website as an option that would be nice too.

    Nick, thx for answer BTW untill today I'm used beta 3, is beta 3 upgradeable with final version of IE7? and what about migration from IE6 to final IE7... is sers will need to backing up some favorites links or some plugins like a MSN tool bar or goole tool bar, is weekly history will be keeped after upgrade? and one more additional question... is Windows 2003 AD GPO settings for domain will continue working normally with settings like proxy settings and so on?

    Everything's nice except that the icons for HTML and MHTML file types are the same as IE itself. I changed those right away...probably that wont be possible in Vista.

    Hey AlexeyBurlachenko:  answers to your questions ...  

  1. When you install IE7 final bits it automatically uninstalls IE7 Beta 3.
  2. Favorites will be migrated, some Active X controls will need to be reinstalled for security reasons.
  3. Group policy settings will continue to work with IE7 – there are over 200 group policy improvements in IE7. Hope that helps.

    I like IE6, all the tabbed stuff in Vista just wasnt my style so I think Ill wait and see what everyone else thinks :-)

    Hey tomf84:  I'm afraid that there is no way to "force" WSUS to sync IE7.0 immediately; but, IE 7.0 will be available for WSUS servers to synchronize starting 1 November.  Check out this blog post on the topic:  http://blogs.technet.com/wsus/
