Dave Remy, Introducing myself
Hi everyone, My name is Dave Remy (call me Rem or Remy), I am a new Program Manager for the Microsoft XML team working with Soumitra and others that will be posting on this blog. I wrote up a too long version of my bio on my nascent blog. Here is the somewhat shorter version that was sent out to the Microsoft team when I started a few months ago ...
I am coming to Microsoft from BEA (actually my office was just down the road in Kirkland) where I was the Development Lead for XMLBeans. XMLBeans is an XML/Java binding technology that lets Java developers work with XML in a java friendly “typed” way but also get to the underlying XML (and back) whenever needed. One of the things I was involved in was moving XMLBeans over to Apache as an open source project. In the Java world XMLBeans is becoming the leading XML to Java binding technology.
I have earned my graying hair in embarrassingly many places. Prior to BEA I was the cofounder/Chief Architect/CTO of GeoTrust, a security company, that is now the second largest Certificate Authority in the world (and catching up with Verisign quickly). While I was GeoTrust I earned my Computer Information Systems Security (CISSP) which means nothing to people outside of security but seems to be a big deal to security folks. Prior to GeoTrust I was CTO at Netstock and co-inventor of their ShareBuilder product. Prior to Netstock I was Director of Technology at Corbis. Corbis is Bill G’s digital image company (and also the company that was responsible for Bill’s house technology). While I was there I got the chanced to work with Eric R and Bill G some. Prior to Corbis I was Director of Architecture at PEMCO. Prior to that I was an Advisory Engineer specializing in DB2 at IBM. Prior to IBM I was partner at a software consultancy, Relational Solutions, Inc (primarily DB2 work). Prior to that I was a Software Engineer at Security Pacific Bank. Prior to that I was a Software Developer at Boeing. And prior to all of that, after dropping out of University in my 4th year, I was a games tester for my Dad’s company The Games Network in Los Angeles.
I live on Mercer Island. I have a wife and two daughters (11 and 14). My wife is a triathlete and consequently I pretend to be one also. I am currently working on my Master’s in CS at Depaul University.
My main focus areas for Microsoft right now is XML Schema as well as other core XML technologies. I have a strong interest in using strong XML types as an XML programming model so I am hoping to participate in some research work going on in that area. In general what I am the most passionate and enthusiastic about is ways to improve the XML programming model to make it easier but still allow developers to take advantage of the full power of XML.
I look forward to posting more on the xmlteam blog as well as my own. See you around!
