Example of a Jetstress 2010 Test Summary Report
Applies to: Exchange Server 2010 SP1, Exchange Server 2010
Topic Last Modified: 2011-02-15
This topic provides you with an example of data that's available in a Jetstress 2010 performance test report, and explains where the key values are stored and how to interpret the data. The report is saved either in the Jetstress installation directory or the path specified in the configuration XML file.
Consider the guidelines in the following table when you're examining the data in a Jetstress 2010 report.
Test results table
Performance counter instance | Guidelines for performance test | Guidelines for stress test |
---|---|---|
I/O Database Reads Average Latency (msec) |
The average value should be less than 20 milliseconds (msec) (.20) and the maximum values should be less than 50 msec. |
The maximum value should be less than 100 msec. |
I/O Log Writes Average Latency (msec) |
Log disk writes are sequential, so average write latencies should be less than 10 msec, with a maximum of no more than 50 msec. |
The maximum value should not exceed 100 msec. |
%Processor Time |
Average should be less than 80% and the maximum should be less than 90%. |
Same as for performance test. |
Available Mbytes (32-bit Windows Server only) |
Minimum should be no less than 50 megabytes (MB). |
Same as for performance test. |
Free System Page Table Entries (32-bit Windows Server only) |
Minimum should be no less than 5,000. |
Same as for performance test. |
Transition Pages Repurposed/sec (Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2) |
Average should be less than 100. |
Same as for performance test. |

Test Summary
This section contains a summary of the test, including when it started, when if finished, and which versions of operating system and ESE were used. The most important part of this section is the overall test result.

Test Issues
This section explains any issues with the test.
Fail |
Process has average log write latencies higher than 20.000 |
Database Sizing and Throughput
This section shows some detailed parameters regarding the test. A performance test should always have 100 percent for Capacity Percentage and Throughput Percentage. In this example a 20 GB LUN was used, Jetstress created a 16 GB database to test against which is only 80 percent of the available space. This is normal behavior; by default, in performance mode Jetstress uses 80 percent of the disk capacity to allow room for growth during the test process.
The most important value in this section is the Achieved Transactional I/O per Second. This value represents the level of IOPS achieved for the database alone, without BDM I/O or LOG I/O.

Jetstress System Parameters
This section displays some system values that Jetstress used for this test. The important values for analysis are Thread Count and Number of Copies per Database.

Transactional I/O Performance
This section of the report displays the Transactional I/O values that were achieved for each database. Transactional I/O doesn't include I/O for background database maintenance. Background database maintenance I/O is mostly sequential, so it isn't considered during the design phase.
Note
To validate that the test has met the design requirements, compare the I/O Database totals in this section to the design targets defined within the Mailbox Server Role Requirements Calculator. For more information about the calculator (and to download the calculator), see Exchange 2010 Mailbox Server Role Requirements Calculator. Background Database Maintenance I/O Performance
This section displays the I/O that was used to perform background database maintenance only. The combination of these values plus Transactional I/O provides the total IOPS generated during the test.

Total I/0 Performance
This table shows all I/O that was recorded during the test (transactional I/O plus background database maintenance I/O). The sum of I/O values from this table should agree with those observed at the storage subsystem.

The following chart shows the observed IOPS from the Windows test host during the Jetstress test. The Host Observed Total IOPS counter includes all system IOPS as well as the test IOPS; however, there should be a strong correlation between the two metrics.
IOPS observed during Jetstress test
In this example, the storage should have been designed to meet a target of 60 IOPS. The discrepancy between design target and total achieved IOPS is caused by the sequential background database maintenance IOPS and log IOPS. If your storage team believes that background database maintenance is causing a test to fail, perform a test with background database maintenance disabled and compare the results. Background database maintenance doesn't usually add any significant overhead to the test latency. An overhead of 0.05 percent is typical.
Host System Performance
This section of the report shows the observed system performance during the test. This section is most often used for troubleshooting. The most important thing to note from this section is that the CPU load from Jetstress is usually minimal. Jetstress has been optimized to evaluate the storage subsystem and not the host performance itself.
